DIETHYL OXALATE
Diethyl Oxalate is a chemical intermediate used in the manufacture of compounds such as
phenobarbital and various dyes. It is a solvent for a number of synthetic and natural
resins. There are some specialty applications as a solvent in nitrocellulose lacquers.
Diethyl Oxalate is miscible with alcohols, ether and other common organic solvents.
While slighly soluble in water, decomposition ensues. Precautions must be taken to prevent
contact with moisture during storage and handling.
Oxalates are toxic. Protection equipment should be used to avoid skin and eye contact,
breathing of fumes or ingestion. In case of contact, flush skin and eyes with plenty of
water for at least 15 minutes. Call a physician.
