VEctomer® Vinyl Ether

VE 4010 Monomer

Composition

  • Vinyl ether terminated aromatic ester monomer: HBVE isophthalate; bis-(4-vinyl oxy butyl) isophthalate
  • Molecular weight = 362.43 (g/mole)
  • CAS # 130066-57-8
  • Formula: C20H26O6

Description

VE 4010 is a difunctional aromatic diluent monomer. It is a low viscosity clear liquid that enhances the performance of radiation cured coatings, inks and adhesives. VE4010 improves adhesion to PVC and metals. Cure speed is boosted in cationically cured epoxy formulations.

Product/Application Benefits

  • Fast cure speed
  • Low initiation energy
  • High gloss
  • Good flexibility vs. hardness
  • Low odor
  • Low viscosity
  • High solvency with vinyl ether oligomers
  • Optimized for compatibility/solubility with commercially available cationic initiators

Photoinitiators

  • Photoinitiators - Triarylsulfonium salts
  • Union Carbide UVI-6974, UVI-6990, 3M FX512, Degussa KI-85.
  • Photoinitiator level - 0.3 - 2.0% (w/w), for coatings up to 6 mil thickness.

Notes:

1) UVI-6990 gives slightly slower cure speeds than UVI-6974. However, UVI-6990 is recommended in color sensitive applications.

2) Irganox 1076 (1% w/w) can be used to reduce discoloration on heating.

3) Gentle heating often improves photoinitiator solubility.

Recommended Curing Conditions

Formulations containing VE 4010 along with VEctomerÒ oligomers and initiator may be UV-cured at 50 to 500 mJ/cm² (approx. 500 to 50 fpm) with two 200 watt/inch medium pressure mercury arc lamps). Vinyl ether formulations containing initiators may be cured with electron beam irradiation at 1 to 4 mrad.

Vinyl ethers cure by an acid-catalyzed reaction. Basic components such as amines in the formulations should be avoided.

Curing is not inhibited by oxygen but may be inhibited by high atmospheric humidity. Inhibition (if any) will depend on the formulation, substrate and temperature in the curing zone.

Storage and Handling

May be heated up to 65 °C for short periods to facilitate mixing and handling.

Mixtures containing initiator should be protected from prolonged exposure to fluorescent lights or sunlight.

Materials should be stored at room temperature, away from sunlight or UV radiation. Please refer to MSDS for additional information regarding safe handling and environmental precautions.
